It’s no secret that not getting enough sleep affects one’s work performance. If you’re constantly tired and sluggish because you don’t get enough zzz’s, it’s highly likely that you won’t be able to give your best at work. Grogginess and fatigue can really affect how you complete tasks and perform various kinds of duties.
This is also why you should also expect lower productivity if you don’t get ample zzz’s. In a study conducted by University of Amsterdam researchers, they found out that you’re more likely to waste time while on the clock if you don’t get quality zzz’s.
It’s all a matter of self-control, according to the data. It turns out that if you don’t get quality shuteye, you’re less likely to keep yourself focused on a task. You’re more easily distracted and you feel like it’s okay to delay the completion of what you’re supposed to be doing.
They were able to learn all of these from testing 71 participants from various fields of work. The subjects had their self-control measured by having them monitor how much time they waste procrastinating while at work and make them assess whether they think they had a good sleep the prior evening.
The test ran for ten days and it showed researchers that the poorer the sleep of the subject is, the more time they waste procrastinating. They say that those with poor sleep have little to no self-control which lets them waste time instead of do something productive.
With these, researchers have come to the conclusion that those who already have low sense of self-control needs quality sleep more. But to be fair, if a person loses self-control when they’re running on little sleep, everyone should be more driven to achieve quality zzz’s as well.
So if you think you’ve been lagging at work and ending up with a lengthy to-do list, you might want to do something about your zzz’s as well. This can create a vicious cycle as the stress from your work load can also keep you up at night. With better zzz’s, you might just turn out to be more efficient, so why not give it a shot?
